Cardiac arrest does not have to lead to death -Expert

by: Oluwayinka Dada and Victoria Ipe
It is not uncommon nowadays to hear of people who suddenly dropped dead and were said to have suffered cardiac arrest.

All over the world, incidences of cardiac arrests are becoming more popular, with it accounting for 40 per cent of all deaths in Europe.

Cardiac arrest, also known as cardiopulmonary arrest or circulatory arrest, is the abrupt cessation of normal circulation of the blood due to failure of the heart to contract effectively during systole.

Speaking with Saturday Tribune, Dr Mudasiru Salami, a Consultant Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon in the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, said “Cardiac arrest is when the sensation of activities of the heart completely stops.

“Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency that, in certain groups of patients, is potentially reversible if treated early enough.

When unexpected cardiac arrest leads to death, it is called sudden cardiac death (SCD).”

In the same vein, Dr Patience Sotunbi, Consultant Anaesthetist, College Of Medicine, University of Ibadan, UCH and president,  Life Resuscitation Society of Nigeria (LIRESON), said cardiac arrest is different from (but may be caused by) a heart attack (myocardial infarction), where blood flow to the still-beating heart is interrupted (cardiogenic shock).

First lady of calm, Sasha P: Musicians provide therapy with music

THE line said “Hey put your head up don’t you cry, you can make it if you try shara giri omo ekun adara” The Yoruba translation is to pull yourself up like a lions kid and it will get better. Her name is Yetunde Alabi better known as Sasha P. When I arrived from North America a year ago, I purchased a Samsung phone which was loaded with her album. This was a 2007 album which I never knew as I was not familiar with her music but I definitely listened to this album 3 times daily but the track “Adara” became my favourite.
Sasha P is very captivating and all her songs are very inspiring. I learned she is a motivational speaker as well. I first saw Sasha on stage in Lagos May 2013, during the #DivasRockConcert. “Always Keep Moving” coupled with “Adara” reduces me to tears when I’m having a tough time in Nigeria.

Mercy Johnson is a Nigerian actress who made her debut in the movie titled the Maid. The talented actress is a thespian of note in Nollywood. She is said to be part of few actresses with intimidating hips after Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde. She is hot and sassy mother of one.

These two personalities from the African continent are gunning for the accolade of ‘Miss Hippie Africa’, an imaginary award for the most endowed hip in the acting world in Africa with these two hottest industries, Nollywood and Ghollywood in focus.
By all standards, both Mercy and Juliet are show stoppers because of what they possess. Their hips cannot be overlooked or ignored no matter what gender you belong to, it always calls for more than the cursory single glance, more often than not, aside the unconscious complement that comes out of your mouth; you are bound to give kudos to the Sculptor who created all in his own image for the master piece.
The RN B goddess, Shakira seems to have said it all in one of her well known songs, ‘Hips Don’t Lie’. These well carved out African hips truly don’t lie.
With all these attributes and accolades they both have possessed as actresses whose hip are you nominating?

X Factor to front real-time story on Radio 2 of JFK's assassination marking 50th anniversary of US President's death

The assassination of John F Kennedy is to be recreated in an historic three-hour primetime programme on Radio 2 - fronted by X Factor host Dermot O'Leary.
In a departure from his usual light entertainment role, O'Leary has been chosen alongside current affairs presenter Jeremy Vine to host the three-hour broadcast on November 22, the 50th anniversary of the US president's death.
It will feature live singers and a band performing poignant songs from the United States civil rights era, with the story being told minute-by-minute, starting with the departure of the Presidential motorcade from Dallas Love Field airport shortly before midday local time.
It will finish with vice-president Lyndon B Johnson being sworn in as President on Air Force One three hours later.
O’Leary - who is reported to have a passion for history - said the story had an additional personal resonance for him because his parents in Co Wexford had met President Kennedy on a journey to trace his Irish family roots.
'They shook his hand,' he said. 'I spoke to my dad about the assassination and he said it was a proper standstill moment. The moon landings and JFK getting shot were the two big moments for that generation.'
Largely known as an entertainment presenter, O’Leary described his role as 'wingman' to the 'gravitas' of Vine, a news and current affairs specialist.
The X Factor presenter is a passionate fan of history and said he would like to make further documentaries as part of the BBC's commemoration of the centenary of the First World War
The presenter has also talked to the BBC about a potential project tracing the front line of the Battle of the Somme, which stretched from the North Sea to Switzerland.
Bob Shennan, controller of Radio 2, said the BBC would broadcast the events at the time of day they happened – the shooting in Dealey Plaza occurred at 6.30pm British time.
