"Don't Rely On Certificate Alone" - Osinbajo Charges Youths

Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Thursday in Ibadan, charged Nigerian youths never to rely on their academic certificate alone to survive.
Osinbajo, who spoke at the 10th convocation ceremony of the Lead City University, Ibadan where 590 students were awarded first degree certificates.
The vice president who was the special guest at the ceremony, said, “I was 60 years old in March this year, and I must confess that one of the greatest surprises I ever experienced was that I just suddenly became 60. I can clearly remember when I graduated from the university. I was 21 years old at the time. How time flies.
“One of the important lessons that you will learn is that time flies whether you are wasting it or you are using it well. It simply flies back. At the age of 60 years, I am entitled to give some advice.
“By talent, a good degree and coming from a very well to do family does not bring success and certainly it does not bring greatness. The most talented people, those who get the best degrees do not necessarily become the most successful in life.
“The difference between success and failure, mediocrity or excellence is character. Along with character is opportunity, perhaps the most crucial is the place of God.”

No secession: Catalonian independence ends in symbolism

Catalonia’s leader, Carles Puigdemont, only made a symbolic declaration of independence from Spain on Tuesday, based on the votes of 2.3million Catalans.
The real declaration has been deferred.
Instead, the leaders have decided to negotiate with Madrid on the region’s future.
Puigdemont’s speech to the autonomous region’s parliament disappointed thousands of pro-independence supporters gathered outside in hopes of hearing the assembly adopt a unilateral proclamation of independence.
Puigdemont had been under intense pressure from all sides.
The Spanish government had threatened tough action, possibly including imposing direct rule on Catalonia from Madrid, if he had gone ahead with breakaway moves.
Both Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s government and European Council President Donald Tusk had urged Puigdemont not to proclaim independence.
And French President Emmanuel Macron rejected Puigdemont’s call for European Union mediation, saying he was confident Madrid could handle the situation.
Puigdemont’s government has been locked in a confrontation with Madrid since holding a referendum on October 1 that was declared illegal by a Spanish high court.
The Catalan government said 90 per cent of those who voted backed independence but turnout was only 43 per cent as many opponents of independence stayed at home.
Hundreds were injured as Spanish police intervened to close polling stations.
Puigdemont told the Barcelona regional parliament that the result provided a popular mandate for independence.
“I assume … the mandate that Catalonia become an independent state in the form of a republic,” he said to prolonged applause in the assembly, which was tightly guarded by Catalan police.
“I propose suspending the effects of the declaration of independence to undertake talks in the coming weeks without which it is not possible to reach an agreed solution.”
He and other regional politicians later signed a document proclaiming “full sovereignty” for Catalonia, but it was unclear whether the move had any legal value.
“We call on all states and international organizations to recognize the Catalan republic as an independent and sovereign state. We call on the Catalan government to take all necessary measures to make possible and fully effective this declaration of independence and the measures contained in the transition law that founds the republic,” the document read.
The Catalan standoff is Spain’s worst political crisis since an attempted military coup in 1981.
Rajoy’s conservative government planned to decide on next steps over Catalonia at a meeting on Wednesday, and he was in consultations with other parties about how to proceed.

'I've had to deny my mother before' - Skales

Nigerian singer Skales in a recent interview opens up on his difficult childhood.

The 'Shake body' singer in a recent chat with Pulse Saturday Beats, says growing up as a tough one.

According to him, he used to sleep in a shopping complex with his mother and has had to deny her several times in the past.
"My father left us when I was really young. I do not even know how he looks like.
My mother and I used to sleep in a shopping complex at a time. I am talking about during my primary and secondary school days in Kaduna.
Then, the only hope for me was music. At some point, I told my mother I wanted to work and support her.
I was chased out of school because I did not pay school fees. I had to steal school uniform because mine was bad and I would tell my mother I saved money for it."

Still speaking on their difficulties, he said, "Also, my mother would go to my friends’ houses to do their laundry, which was embarrassing to me.
I had to deny my mother. I also did not let my friends know where I lived because most of them were children of politicians." Adding, "When I told my mother I was moving to Lagos, she asked me to finish my university education in Kaduna. But I convinced her I could cope.
From Kaduna to Lagos, I got a free ride and the first place I stayed was Orile (Lagos). I lied to the person that gave me free ride that I would stay with him for a couple of days and it turned to months.
He later started a label with some friends; they knew some people but it was not easy."

Reps call for rehabilitation of Ibadan museum

The House of Representatives on Wednesday urged the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture to rehabilitate the Museum of National Unity in Ibadan.

The call followed a resolution on a motion titled “Need to Rehabilitate the Museum of National Unity, Ibadan” sponsored by Rep. Adedapo Lam-Adesina.
In the motion, Lam-Adesina said that the poor state of facilities in the museum had defeated the purpose for which it was established.
He said that the dilapidated state of the museum would discourage tourists from visiting it, therefore negating the goal of using tourism for economic diversification.
According to him, three years after the civil war, the Federal Government, as part of efforts to enhance unity among Nigerians, proposed to establish museum of national unity in Ibadan, Enugu, Maiduguri and Sokoto.
“Ibadan museum of national unity was established in April 4, 2002, thus becoming the first of the four museums proposed in 1973.
“The museum has four galleries, namely unity, masquerade, pottery, and Yoruba homes, which boast of many antiquities that attract tourists from within and outside the country.
“However, the museum lacks standard conservation laboratory, research tools, modern storage system for antiquities, well-equipped library, alternative source of power, potable water and modern furniture,” Lam-Adesina said.
He said that the years of neglect of the museum made nearly all the buildings within the complex to be dilapidated and now required urgent rehabilitation.
“The museum has not received running costs for the maintenance of the complex since 2014,’’ the lawmaker added.

African Art Exhibition: 'Her Story' answers the call for change

Rele Gallery, on Sunday, opened doors to an exciting evening of multi-dimensional stories.
Her Story Exhibition brought together five female artists answering to the pledge for continuous change. It serves as an expression of diverse stories to create awareness and also propagate conversations. Each artist brought to canvas a unique expression of their stories through the eyes of a woman.
Going further than just story-telling, the exhibition sought for a celebration of feminine virtues; the quiet strength in survival and sheer joy from the victory of conquering.
Her story exhibition lent voices from Oluchi Chuks Zom, Queen Nwaneri, Buki M. Animashaun, Ayobola Kekere-Ekun, Haneefah Adam and a special feature by Ngozi Schommers.
On Acrylic and canvas, Queen Nwaneri brought to light a statement so bold. One made for the girl child and her right to being treated as a human. She makes a case for such humanity, in her works I can be; I can think; I am a woman. It is her belief that every girl-child should be given equal opportunities in regards to marriage, education, career and even her right to decisions. She interacts with the viewers, requests for them to make it a duty to not just converse but work towards a change they deserve.

Moving through another line of making a statement is Ayobola Kekere-Ekun with the Cultural Dysmorphia series that has boldly represented her navigation around the patriarchal spaces in Nigeria. Her women are sheathed, almost invisible, not to be seen or heard from. She speaks of the “eyes-wide shut” attitude most individuals have towards a problem so glaring. In her series, we also find the expectations placed on the shoulder of a woman, to not speak up because she is required to listen, and listen only.

Black Hearted series also stands boldly in its space. Buki M. Animashaun paints her way to liberation from labels, from her story as a black woman written just in technicality. To be judged of as one thing is pain and her expression of this shows in the lurid colours observed on canvas.

Haneefah Adam makes her debut in this exhibition with a female subject and a journey through time. In the beginning, we find her encrusted, searching and still in a process of discovery. From there on is her blooming and freedom; she is observed unravelling from boundaries and giving way to the woman beneath.

In her ethereal photographs, we see several intriguing elements come to play. The colours radiant of feminine energy, Oluchi Chuks Zọm photographed an exciting visual representation of the long historical connection between nature and femininity. They both have something in common which is beauty; beauty so admirable and true.

In this fusion, several multiplicities have been expressed and encountered. It was an evening lighted up with the energy of the visitors, drinks from Cointreau, and appreciation from art-lovers.
Her Story Exhibition is open untill the 24th of March, 2017. So, come and share in these stories.

Hajiya Rakiya, the only surviving elder sister of President Muhammad Buhari, has appealed to Nigerians to continue to pray for the well-being of the president, instead of spreading rumours about his health.

Lady Caught Stealing Clothes At A Store, Stripped Unclad

A desperate and hungry 36-year-old single lady, Jane Okeke was stripped unclad and arrested after she was caught stealing some clothes at PEP Super Store in Isolo, Lagos.

It was learnt the suspect went to a inner room provided to customers to test their selected clothes by the management before they make payment.

However, Okeke reportedly selected 11 different wears and went inside the changing room with her handbag, pretended to be trying on those clothes before she could make payment.

Unknown to the management, Jane had another motive.

She reportedly took off her old clothes she had kept in her bag, including the clothes she worn and changed them with some of the new clothes she selected from the store, wore some she pretended wanting to buy.

However, as she made to exit the store, the security demanded to search her and it was during that exercise that the management discovered what she did.

She was stripped of the clothes she had on and was handed over to the police by the management.

At the police station, Anambra State-born Jane Okeke confessed that she stole. She said she was a drop-out student of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra where she hails from.

She said she could not complete her programme in the school due to finance because of the death of her father and had to come to Lagos to "hustle" to make ends meet.

Jane was arraigned before Isolo Magistrate’s court with conduct likely to cause breach of public peace and stealing under the Criminal code.

She pleaded not guilty.

The presiding Magistrate, Mrs A.K. Shonubi granted her bail in the sum of N10,000 with one surety.

She was however remanded in prison custody pending when she will perfect her bail.

The matter was adjourned till 20 February 2017.

Another Nigerian Man Caught With Drugs In Thailand (photo)

I wonder some Nigerians are bent on having their life cut short due to their quest for quick cash.

10 Million Baht (street value) worth of 'Ice' was discovered at the home of a Nigerian former school teacher, John Ifeanyi on Tuesday, February 7th, in Srinakarin, Thailand.

When his home at the Parkland building was raided late Tuesday, Mr Ifeanyi had hid his stash of Drugs in model boats and Aeroplanes. He was eventually busted.

He claims that when he stopped working in a Chonburi Language school 5 months ago, a man called “Mike” offered him 100,000 baht to sell drugs. Police understand that Ifeanyi is part of a bigger gang of Nigerians operating in the drug trade in the Sri Nakharin area.

Ifeanyi confessed that he was paid 100,000 baht for each delivery he made and he had already done this five of six times before he was caught.

He was charged with possession of a Class 1 drug with intent to sell and detained for prosecution.

Soldiers who Brutalised Crippled Man over Uniform Arrested

The Nigerian Army says it has identified and arrested the two soldiers who brutalised a crippled man in New Market Road, Ontisha, in Anambra State.

The army in a statement released on Wednesday night, said the soldiers had also been charged by their commanding officer. There action is nothing short of madness.

I could not even watch the video for long. Why do such to a physically challenged man?

The video showing the soldiers beating and dragging the crippled man for wearing a military camouflage on the floor went viral on Wednesday.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.Gen. Sani Usman, said in the statement that the soldiers had been apprehended.

He said, “The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to a video clip in which two soldiers were seen maltreating a physically challenged person for allegedly wearing a camouflage shirt.

“We wish to inform the public that the incident took place on Tuesday 7 February 2017, at Onitsha, Anambra State.

“In line with our zero tolerance for acts of indiscipline and unprofessional conducts especially in relation to violation of human rights, we wish to further state that the soldiers involved have since been identified and apprehended.

“They have also been charged for assault by their Commanding Officer. Similarly, troops have been warned to desist from such acts that infringe on human rights and cast serious aspersions on the good image of the Nigerian Army.

“The public should please regard this ugly incident as an isolated case which is not true reflection of the Nigerian Army.”

- Kudos to the Army authorities for taking action.

Crazy Man beats Mother to Death over Late Sister's Property

Of a truth, greed is a big problem. A 51-year-old man has allegedly beaten his own mother to death after a disagreement over his late sister’s property.

The 81-year-old mother, Mrs. Dorcas Ayoola, lived in one-storeyed building on United Estate in the Ajah area of Lagos.

The suspect, Oluwaseye Ayoola, who lives in the Lekki area, reportedly went to demand N500,000 from his mother at about 6pm on Tuesday. The money was said to be part of an N11m property bequeathed to the family by his late sister, the woman's daughter.

It was learnt that Mama Dorcas told Oluwaseye that she did not have the money on her and asked for time to raise the sum. But Oluwaseye reportedly felt his mother was insincere and in a fit of anger, the second child of the family reportedly grabbed the octogenarian and punched her.

Not done, he allegedly slammed a hammer and a television set on the woman and fled the house, leaving the old woman in a pool of blood.

Neighbours were drawn to woman's groans and rushed to the scene to find out that she had died.

It was learnt that the alleged murder was reported at the Ogombo Police Station, and the suspect was eventually arrested.

However, a resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the suspect was always aggressive whenever he wanted to collect money from Mama Dorcas.

He said, “The television he smashed on the woman was big. This was a mother he had depended on all his life. Even if he wanted the whole property, he should have exercised patience.

His brother is abroad and he always sent money to him. All his siblings give him money as well. He is just lazy and wicked.”

A shop owner on the estate, who gave her name only as Beatrice, said, “He was living with the mother until lately when he decided to live on his own. The mother raised the money for his rent.”

Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmos, said the case was reported to the police by the suspect’s brother, Akintunde Ayoola, adding that the corpse of the woman had been deposited in a morgue for autopsy.

SP Badmos said, “After the brother reported to the police, the command’s detectives from the Ogombo division launched a manhunt for the suspect and he was arrested.

“During interrogation, the suspect said he had gone to his mother to ask for some money but she refused to part with the sum, which angered him and made him to pounce on the old woman.

“He was said to have asked the mother to give him N500,000 out of N11m his late sister left behind in her will. He is in custody under investigation.”
